My main influences in Graphic Art have typically been artists and movements such as late Art Deco, Psychedelic and Pop Art. My illustration style tends to embrace those influences that maintain a looser, freer style. I like to use pen and pencil in the style in which I believe it belongs, not tight and mechanical as in technical illustrations. I prefer but sketchier, hand drawn illustrations that denote a more naturalistic style like woodcuts and pen & ink, even when enhanced digitally.
In terms of Graphic Design, I feel that pursuing personal expressions or aesthetic preferences can be interpreted as self-serving, if it is at the expense of the client. As the pieces of work in my portfolio make evident, my style is multifaceted and allows me to realize a wide range of subjects and clients. Some people say that offering more than one look or aesthetic can detract from an Illustrator’s appeal. I think that is a narrow view of what can be expected from a client. I will always work in a style that is appropriate for the subject or client. I am sure that continuing to broaden my technique and style will contribute to being a versatile attribute to the client and me.
