Rashad Epps

B.F.A. Drawing

My art reveals an internal truth about the people around me. I talk to close friends and associates in very deep and personal conversations. I take pieces of them; parts they keep secret, allowing my artistic vision to replace their spoken words and further investigate who they are. I apply my subject’s favorite colors as basis for the general color scheme of a piece. I use various elements of inspirations from my subject’s lives such as music, dance, and photography. I utilize colors symbolically such as green for money, red for passion, and blue for loneliness or depression. I use composition as a tool, taking the viewer on a journey through my subjects’ life; masking their secrets by employing opposing color schemes from their favorite hobbies. I interpret rather than divulge keeping their confidence.

I practice graffiti as a means of simple identification. The application of this street art in the lettering and colors symbolically represents the people in the piece. Subjects in my works are also represented using realism, animation and personal aesthetics in a surrealistic setting, giving my audience a visual explanation of who this person is to me. I use my characters to reveal my characters personality pictorially rather than through language. I want my audience’s journey to leave them with the feeling that they had a deep and profound conversation with whoever they just met in my works.
